Whether it’s the holidays or not, chocolate chip cookies are always a good idea. But to make them holiday-ready, we turned our beloved cookie recipe into bars, added a bunch of festive stir-ins, and finished with a luscious topping of buttercream frosting and sprinkles. They’re guaranteed to become the new most-requested favorite year. When it’s not holiday time, you can add in different any-time-of-year stir-ins and top with rainbow sprinkles or nonpareils.

Ingredients

  • 1/2cupsalted butter, softened

  • 1/2cupshortening

  • 1cup packedbrown sugar

  • 1/2cupgranulated sugar

  • 1/2tsp.baking soda

  • 3/4tsp.salt

  • 2eggs

  • 2Tbsp.light-color corn syrup

  • 2tsp.vanilla

  • 2 3/4cupsall-purpose flour

  • 3 1/2cups stir-ins, such as candy-coated milk chocolate pieces; semi-sweet chocolate chips; white chocolate chips; butterscotch-flavor chips; chopped candy bars; chopped toasted walnuts or pecans; and/or broken pretzel pieces

  • 1recipeButtercream Frosting (optional)

  • Sprinkles (optional)

Buttercream Frosting

  • 1cupsalted butter, softened

  • 4cupspowdered sugar

  • 3Tbsp.heavy cream

  • 1tsp.vanilla

  • 1/4tsp.almond extract (optional)

  • Dashsalt

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 15x10-inch pan.

  2. In a large bowl beat butter and shortening with a mixer on medium 30 seconds. Add the brown sugar, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt. Beat until mixture is combined, scraping bowl as needed. Beat in eggs, corn syrup, and vanilla. Beat in flour. Stir in desired stir-ins.

  3. Press dough into prepared pan. If you like, top with sprinkles and/or additional stir-ins. Bake until golden, 15 to 20 minutes. Cool in pan on a wire rack. If you like, spread with Buttercream Frosting and top with sprinkles. Cut into bars.

Buttercream Frosting

  1. In an extra-large bowl beat the 1 cup softened salted butter with a mixer on medium until creamy, 1 to 2 minutes. Beat in 1 cup of the powdered sugar. Add 2 Tbsp. of the heavy cream, the clear vanilla, almond extract (if using), and the dash salt; beat on low until combined. Gradually beat in remaining 3 cups powdered sugar just until combined. Beat on medium, scraping bowl as needed, until fluffy, 5 minutes. Add remaining 1 Tbsp. heavy cream; beat on high 1 minute more.
